- Upper West Side, Manhattan, New York City
- lives in an apartment building
- will dig a tunnel in any type of soil - specially gardens
- the car is in the garage under building
- hates the side entrance
- rugs line the apartment
- looking forward to a weekend home...

Family
- 2 cats and 2 humans
- one of domesticated breeds closest to wolves - often referred to as 'primitive'

Appearance
- compact and muscular
- looks as any other spitz breed
- height: 16.5 in; weight: 25 lbs
- urajiro throat and under body
- strong legs for nimble and fast motion (as in bolting away)
- tightly curled tail
- beautiful reddish fur
- other Shibas can be black and tan or sesame

Hunting for food
- hunts anybody who has ever given him a treat and demands more
- howls and demands whatever you are eating
- eats everything found in parks, streets ...
- very good sense of hearing - picks up sounds of food being touched anywhere in the house
- keen sense of smell - does locate treats in anybody's pockets
- won't give up until somebody gives him a treat
- also raids the cat's food dishes

Enemies and protection
- was attacked twice - escaped unharmed, human companion was seriously bitten
- sheds A LOT twice a year - fur is free to anyone who wants it
- "hugs" buildings when it rains
- greets his friends with yodels
- if off-leash will run away and will be hit by cars
- average life span is 13-15 years
- we met a 18 1/2 years old Shiba

The young
- are dangerously cute
- the Shiba-6, have you heard of them?
- couldn't be more cute
- puppies are taken to new homes when at 8 weeks
- are housebroken in about 4 days
- look like stuffed bears
- after about 4 days the new house has a new ruler!
Red Fox

Where it lives
- Canada, Alaska, United States, Europe, North Africa, all of Asia, including Japan
- lives in a burrow that was dug by another animal.
- may dig a tunnel of its own in loose soil
- dens may also be under buildings
- can have more than one entrance
- grass and leaves line the den
- might have more than one den for a family

Family
- male is a dog, female is a vixen, young are pups
- belong to the same family as the dog, gray wolf and coyote

Appearance
- small slender mammal
- pointy nose and pointy ears.
- body length is 100 to 112 cm. including tail
- white throat and under body.
- legs have black paws with white "socks"
- long bushy tail, white at the tip.
- beautiful fur is reddish or sandy in colour
- fur can also be brownish, black or silvery

Hunting for food
- hunts for rabbits, hares, lemmings, squirrels and mice.
- also eats birds, eggs, insects and snakes.
- buries food
- very good sense of hearing
- picks up sounds of small animals in the grass, underground
or under the snow (fox in the snow)
- keen sense of smell , can locate a nest of eggs
- hunts from dusk to dawn
- also raids chicken coops on farms.

Enemies and protection
- wolves, lynxes, fishers, bobcats, cougars and coyotes hunt it
- trapped for its beautiful fur
- It runs along logs, doubles back or wades in water so
hunters cannot follow its scent.
- warns others with a sharp bark
- foxes living near people are hit by cars
- average life span is three to five years in the wild
- some may live over ten years

The young
- female (vixen) has four or five pups in the spring.
- up to ten pups could be in a litter
- male brings food to the vixen so she can stay with the pups.
- in a month pups can eat meat
- family stays together till fall
- by winter the young are on their own
- many foxes die before they are a year old
